Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend themselves against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique. The Gracie family, the founders of BJJ, modified judo and traditional Japanese martial arts to create what we know today as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Here at Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Carlsbad, we focus on the basic fundamentals of self-defense found in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

No Gi Jiu-Jitsu

With traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a Gi or Kimono is used as the formal attire. Whereas in No Gi Jiu-Jitsu, as the name suggests, no Gi or Kimono is used and the formal attire is often t-shirt and shorts or a variety of rashguards and spats/leggings.

While Gi and No Gi Jiu-Jitsu are very similar, the way both styles evolve are quite different. In Gi, the numerous grips and Gi material mean that a lot of set ups are based on using the Gi material for control and submissions.
In No Gi Jiu-Jitsu, because the lack of the Gi, you will usually find that No Gi BJJ tends to be faster paced. You will also notice No Gi players use more guillotines as well as foot locks.
